Zachary’s Story

Zachary Wensel was full of energy, determination, and love for the simple joys of life. At just 19 years old, he had already achieved what many only dream of — becoming a skilled heavy equipment operator. He was proud of his work and the responsibility it carried, and those around him admired his strong work ethic.

But Zachary wasn’t just hardworking — he was adventurous and fun-loving. He loved being outdoors, whether it was hunting in the woods, fishing at his favorite spot, hiking trails, or camping under the stars. At home, he enjoyed target practice off the back deck, a pastime that mixed his love for focus and precision with his passion for the outdoors.

Family meant everything to Zachary. He cherished get-togethers, where laughter, food, and connection filled the room. He had a way of making those around him feel loved, included, and important. His smile and humor could light up even the hardest days.

On March 3, 2024, Zachary’s life changed forever. While driving on a rural Ohio state route, he was involved in a devastating collision with a horse-drawn buggy. The crash left him with a traumatic brain injury (TBI). Though he survived, the invisible pain and struggles from his injury weighed heavily on him in the months that followed.

On April 9, 2024 — just four months to the day before his 21st birthday — we lost Zachary as a direct result of the challenges he faced from the crash.

Zachary’s loss is not only a deep heartbreak for his family and friends but also a sobering reminder of the dangers created when fast-moving vehicles and horse-drawn buggies share roads without proper safety measures. His death was not just a moment at the crash site; it was a ripple that stole a young man’s bright future months later.

Now, through Zachary’s Law, his family fights to honor his memory. They are determined that no other family will have to endure the same pain, and that every life on Ohio’s roads — whether in a car, truck, or buggy — will be protected.
